KERATOSIS PILARIS

What are all these small bumps on the back of my arms?
Keratosis pilaris is a common skin condition which is usually characterized by small bumps on the back of the arms. It can also occur on the thighs and, rarely, on the cheeks. It often occurs in people who have rough dry skin.

How do I get them? Are they contagious?
The cause is unknown. Keratosis pilaris often runs in families. Keratosis pilaris is not dangerous or contagious.

How do I treat this?
The best treatment is an alpha hydroxy acid product. This product is fairly expensive but will go a long way if used sparingly. Alpha hydroxy acid products are available without a prescription from this office. The gel should be applied to the involved areas once or twice a day. Another product is MD Forte, which may help smooth out the skin. Keratosis pilaris can be controlled with alpha hydroxy acids, but there is no cure for this condition.
